A lot of my Cougar Town watching friends have asked me to hunt down the songs that played on various episodes of Cougar Town, so I’ve decided to post it here as well for those who are looking for it, too.

Keane is one of those bands who have made it a point to reinvent their music style every album. I was first captivated by Keane back in 2004, when they released their debut album, “Hopes and Fears”, reveling in the often melancholic emotion that each of their songs was attached to, perfectly portrayed by Tom Chaplin’s distinct voice, and the way he’d gasp for breath in parts of the song, that somehow makes the feeling of despair even more tangible.

Another unique characteristic of Keane is the absence of a guitarist, something that has worked to their advantage, because you get tunes that are more raw, and somehow more reflective.

When they released their second album, Under the Iron Sea, with “Is it any Wonder?”, you start seeing that they’re embarking on a journey towards something less morose. But you have songs like “Bad Dream” that beg to differ. The second album felt like an amalgamation of both the past and what is to come. I enjoyed the second album as much as the first.

Fast forward to 2010, with the release of Night Train, which includes 2 songs featuring Somali Canadian rapper K’naan. The melancholy has been replaced by upbeat saccharine beats.

The new songs are definitely a light year far departure from the old songs, but I remain in the middle as to whether it’s a departure I love or approve of, or whether I’m hoping they’d go back to where they came from. Tom Chaplin’s beautiful voice is still eminent but instead of sitting down in quiet, almost solemn contemplation while listening to Keane’s tracks (something I find myself doing when I listen to their earlier songs), I find myself bobbing my head, tapping my foot, and generally feeling the good energy of the newer songs. Between these two effects on me, I would say I like both equally, depending on the day and depending on my mood. My opinion on the albums is quite similar.

What I find myself missing terribly though is that characteristic way he’d gasp for breath at certain intervals of the song. It sounds a tad ridiculous I know, but I just can’t help looking for it. I won’t ever stop looking for it, which means I probably won’t ever stop listening to the addictive tunes that Keane continues to dish out either.

What are your opinions on the new album of Keane vis-a-vis the older ones? Which do you like more?

~ Missy

So in the heartfelt season finale of Glee, Mr. Schuster takes out his ukulele and sings for his class a rendition of “Somewhere over the Rainbow” – the same version Jason Castro was known for back in American Idol, and I must say the Glee club teacher’s version pales in comparison. His voice doesn’t have that unique quality to it (I feel that Schuster’s voice is very boy band / acapella) that the dreadhead has, and musical timing and interpretation was done better by the American Idol contestant. You be the judge if you agree:

Will Schuster’s version:

Jason Castro’s version:

The first season of Cougar Town is finished and I am ACHING for more episodes! Contrary to the title, the TV show does NOT revolve around cougar-ish acts. In fact, the cougar idea lingers around the first few episodes and then Jules (played by Courtney Cox) starts dating men her age. Barbs still gives a few Cougar jokes every now and then but they are minimal and they are just enough to add some more color to the already zany splash of colors the show has.

So what do you get when you subtract the Cougar from the Cougar Town? Still a ton of awesome! You get the quick-fire crazy type of humor that Scrubs is famous for (Cougar Town was made by the same makers of Scrubs). You get a fantastic comedy with a fantastic cast, each of whom have their own brand of humor (from the smug guy to the ditsy party girl) that just really well with the dynamics of the rest! The cast has become this one great close gang (The Cul de Sac crew), and you cannot get enough of the relationships they have with one another.

You also get the occassional “aww” teary moments, most of which are courtesy of Travis Cobb (played by Dan Byrd), the son of Jules, the youngest lead character in the story who, by no means, pales in comparison to the rest of the characters of the show in terms of comedic timing. Every now and then, you are reminded of just how much Travis loves his parents, despite how dysfunctional they usually are – chasing after red balloons, driving in golf carts, etc.

You also watch the inherent differences between females and males, and how they cope with the quirks of the opposite sex. Like how males use a defense mechanism against females when they lash out.

Ultimately, this show is about friendship and the fun, love, and kookiness that comes with it. The beach scene of the last episode is testament to that (I confess I got a tad teary-eyed, especially knowing I have to wait a couple of months for Cougar Town Season 2!). It is an absolutely fun ride watching episode after episode, and I suggest you try it out if you haven’t yet!

I am totally stoked. Jason Castro has to be like one of my top 5 favorite American Idol contestants, and to hear that his album is doing this well makes me really happy. What I always loved about him (which Paula Abdul also mentioned several times in the show) is how he uniquely interprets songs. The way he times his wordings as he sang Hallelujah and Somewhere over the Rainbow is living testament to that.

His voice also has that unique vibe to it – it has a certain twang that I cannot really describe accurately, but basically if you hear his songs on the radio, you know it’s the cute lovable dread head singing.

I have not gotten his album yet (but I most definitely will!), I’ve only bought his EP and it was a totally good buy. The acoustic version of Let’s Fall in Love Again on the EP was good but I am excited to own the full album so that I can have the original version with all the beats to it. I think this song really represents Jason Castro the best and I’m glad he released this before Love Uncompromised. If I were You is another fun tune he dishes out – the lyrics (”If I were you, I’d fall for me”), the singing, everything is so fun, and an absolute delight to the ears.

I also liked his slower songs. Sweet Medicine, for one, has a very good melody:

John Mayer is back with his fourth studio album, “Battle Studies, released last November 17, 2009. The first song I heard from the album was “Heartbreak Warfare”, and I enjoyed listening to it. The songs are laced with the trademark wit, heart, and storytelling feel to his lyrics, which I have always exceptionally loved about the American artist. He is certainly not one to toss the importance of the words on the back burner. And then there is his husky voice and distinct tone, that is an absolute comfort to listen to.

I must say that I’m not jumping up and down and raving nonstop about the album. I confess that I am still very partial to his first album “Room for Squares”, as it showcased more styles and beats. With that said, however, “Battle Studies” is quite a good album, none the less.

Here’s the “Assassin”, one of his less well-known songs on the album:

Nothing could be better than listening to Kings of Convenience on a lazy day… Or any other day for that matter. This band is Bossa Nova meets Indie meets Jack Johnson. Their music is absolutely, absolutely soothing and just lovely to the ears. You must listen to fully appreciate. I chose “Mrs. Cold”, one of their newer songs to illustrate their genius:

I like how it’s soothing but not dreary or boring. I find myself bopping along while listening to it, but I feel very at peace as well. Vicky happens to like this band too.

The girl on the left of the image is not Lady Gaga, but a newcomer by the name of Ke$ha, who set the record of highest weekly female downloads in the US.
